Wood Machinist Gains Full-Time Role After Apprenticeship

Congratulations to David Cheetham, our wood machinist based at host business, Intrim Group, on graduating from his apprenticeship.

David commenced his Certificate III in Timber and Composites Machining four years ago, at the Picton-based timber manufacturer and supplier. David will be staying on at the company in a full-time position, which is a fantastic outcome at the end of his apprenticeship!

Before completing his trade, David answered a few questions about his time as an apprentice and what advice he would share to anyone wanting to get into the timber industry.


Why did you initially want to take on a wood machining apprenticeship?

I initially took on the wood machining apprenticeship to further myself by gaining a trade.

What are some of the key skills you have developed in your apprenticeship?

Some of the key skills include, set-up, operation and maintenance of all types of machines related to timber.

What has been a main highlight or achievement throughout your apprenticeship?

I believe the main highlight was completing TAFE and gaining recognition for the hard work.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

I have enjoyed working in an ever-changing industry for an industry leading company.

What do you hope to do now that you have completed your apprenticeship?

I hope to continue to improve my skills and start to train others in the industry.

What advice would you give to anyone considering taking on a wood machining apprenticeship?

The advice I would give is to give it a go. A lot of the fundamental skills are interchangeable with cabinet making and shop fitting so there is always ways to improve yourself for your career in the timber trade.
