Frequently asked questions

What is an apprenticeship? add

An apprenticeship combines paid work with formal training for the apprentice, on site, while they also attend TAFE. Apprenticeships typically take three to four years to complete and at completion, the apprentice obtains an industry recognised national qualification

What is a traineeship? add

A traineeship combines paid work with formal training and includes the trainee undertaking their study online through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Traineeships take one to two years to complete and at completion, the trainee obtains an industry recognised national qualification.

What is a school based apprenticeship or traineeship? add

A school based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) combines paid work, training and school. Each SBAT has a minimum number of workdays required to complete during their HSC years and must work 1 day per week during their normal school week as well as during school holidays. After completing an SBAT, the apprentice or trainee obtains an industry recognised national qualification that will gain credit towards their HSC.

What is a group training organisation? add

A group training organisation (GTO) is an organisation that employs apprentices and trainees, and then places them with a host business/employer, who they work for while receiving on-the-job training for their apprenticeships or traineeship. The apprentice/trainee completes a recognised qualification through a registered training organisation (RTO), such as TAFE NSW, whilst working.

As a GTO, My Gateway is the legal employer of its apprentices and trainees.

Is My Gateway a recruitment agency? add

No, My Gateway is a group training organisation. Applying for one of our vacancies does not mean you have signed up to My Gateway and we in turn, have to find you a job. Our Recruitment team reviews applications received and shortlists the candidates suitable for specific vacancies. We then get in touch with these candidates to begin the interview process, liaising with the relevant host business along the way to ensure the right apprentice or trainee is offered employment.

What regions do you work in? add

My Gateway places apprentices and trainees with host businesses across the Sydney metro region.

Over the years, we have also worked with host businesses in regions such as Central Coast, Illawarra, Newcastle and the Southern Highlands.

What is a host business? add

A host business (also referred to as a host employer) is a business who partners with My Gateway to take on an apprentice and/or trainee. While My Gateway is the legal employer of the apprentice/trainee, the host business is where the apprentice/trainee will undertake their placement and gain on-the-job training.

Am I eligible to do an apprenticeship or traineeship? add

If you are of working age (14 years/9 months), an Australian citizen or a foreign national with permanent residency, you are eligible to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship. Please go to the Training Services NSW website for other criteria around citizenship and residency status.

If you already hold a VET or higher education qualification, your eligibility to do an apprenticeship or traineeship may depend on the outcome of the apprenticeship/traineeship you wish to do. For example, if you have completed a Certificate III in Business Administration, you would not be eligible to undertake a business traineeship that involves the same qualification.

Again, please refer to the Training Services NSW website for more around existing qualifications eligibility. Alternatively, contact us on 1800 993 200 or via info@mygateway.org.au.
