Trade Engagement – Where Are They Now? Mitchell Watt

26 April 2020

Mitchell Watt was a participant in last year’s Camden High School Trade Engagement Program. He finished the program a bit earlier than expected to take up a marine mechanic apprenticeship at company, Go Boating.

Mitchell has come a long way from the early days of last year’s Trade Engagement Program.

Mitchell really enjoys his trade and is very grateful for the experience of going through the Trade Engagement Program. Here is an update from him.

What are some of your regular tasks?

Servicing and your normal maintenance type work. We do wiring and the electrical side of things, as well as plumbing.

What skills or knowledge have you used from the Trade Engagement Program in the first year of your apprenticeship?

General measuring and cutting skills. A lot of the safety knowledge.

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship?

Being out of the school and getting to know what the trade is all about. Getting to know the different people you talk to everyday – there’s a lot of communication.

How would you say the Trade Engagement Program has helped you in your apprenticeship so far?

[The work experience] helped with knowing your hours and how the day works. It is completely different to school. The program really helped prepare me for the differences between work and school.

What advice would you give students who are looking to leave school to take up a trade?

Look around and try different things. Trying different things really helped me find out what I wanted to do.
