Recruitment Corner: Tips for Your Video Interview

06 April 2020

The traditional face-to-face job interview is a thing of the past for at least the next few months, as recruiters and employers navigate through the COVID-19 situation. My Gateway’s Internal Recruiter, Mitch Wells, conducting a recent job interview via video link.

Many workplaces, including My Gateway, have switched to conducting job interviews via video conferencing, to ensure the safety of staff and potential employees, and to keep in line with current social distancing measures.

We asked our Senior Internal Recruiter, Aiza Franco, and Internal Recruiter, Mitch Wells, to share their list of tips for young job seekers who are about to experience their first video job interview:

  • First impressions still count. Make sure you are well presented E.g. clean shaven, tidy hair etc.
  • Dress professionally as you would for a face-to-face interview from head to toe.
  • A few days before the interview, trial the technology you will be using to make sure it is working correctly, as well download any apps or plugins needed.
  • Make sure you have a working web camera or if you are using your phone, make sure you have something to hold your phone to keep it stable.
  • Be prompt and ready to go; log in to meeting link at least five minutes prior to your interview beginning.
  • Ensure your device is fully charged prior to the interview.
  • Keep surrounding noises to a minimum. Conduct the interview in a private space.
  • Removing any inappropriate or irrelevant items that might be visible on screen.
  • It can be easy to drift when the person you’re talking to isn’t in the room so maintain good eye contact and body language by looking directly in the camera instead of screen or own photo.
  • Maintain good posture by sitting with back straight and arms resting on the desk or lap.
