My Gateway’s Work With Schools in 2019

My Gateway’s presence within schools across the Sydney metro region strengthened in 2019.

Our School to Work team were incredibly busy throughout the year, with countless programs, presentations and meetings taking place to help educate students, careers advisors, teachers and parents on the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Along with the efforts of our School to Work team this year, our Field and Recruitment teams also had a strong presence at different school events across the region including multiple careers expos, information nights and interview days.

Snapshot

• The School to Work team made contact with 152 schools throughout the Sydney metro area and delivered 114 presentations at schools across the same region.
• The team held several Trade Engagement Programs with students at schools across South Western Sydney, including the four-term pilot program with Year 10 students from Camden High School. The students engaged with multiple trades throughout the year including carpentry and engineering and 9 of the students have landed full-time apprenticeships. The students graduated from the program in early December.
• Other high school programs have included a one-term Business Administration program with students from Airds High School and Trade/Traineeship programs with Campbelltown Performing Arts High School, Elizabeth Macarthur High School, Ingleburn High School and Magdalene Catholic High School.
• The Recruitment team visited 12 schools for interview days, with over 100 students participating in these interviews. Many of these students are now in our pool of candidates that we hope to place in jobs in the near future.

School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships Program

My Gateway also launched its School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships (SBATs) program this year, welcoming two SBATs in the first half of 2019.

Jackson Parker, a student from John Therry Catholic School, began his school based carpentry apprenticeship back in March, with long-time host business, Combined Building.

The My Gateway office also welcomed Chloe Vanderstraaten, from Leumeah High School, in May. Chloe is undertaking a Business Administration traineeship while still at school.

Two more SBATs commenced employment towards the end of 2019. Tyrell Ao began his plant mechanic school based apprenticeship as part of a scholarship with long-time host business, CJD Equipment. We also welcomed Marcus Zovic, who started his carpentry school based apprenticeship with new host business, Zovic Holdings.

We are currently in the process of placing several students in school based positions for next year and look forward to growing the program and helping more young people get a head start on their careers in 2020!
