Congratulations to My Gateway carpentry apprentice, Josiah Odonga, who has been nominated for an award at the upcoming NSW Training Awards for the Central & Northern region.

Josiah, who is hosted to building and construction company Icon, is up for the Apprentice of the Year award at the regional event, which is taking place virtually on Wednesday 24 June. The 4th year apprentice is very grateful to be a finalist and believes it’s a good gauge as to how far he has come throughout his training.

“For me these achievements highlight how consistently striving to bring a good attitude and work ethic to site every day can enable me to be successful in this industry,” Josiah said.

“It is also proves to myself that I am slowly absorbing the knowledge and understanding from the various mentors I have had throughout my apprenticeship.”

You may recall Josiah won two awards at My Gateway’s annual Apprentice & Trainee awards last year, including Overall Apprentice of the Year. The apprentice will soon be a qualified tradesman, with Josiah set to complete his qualification next month.

“I’m glad that my apprenticeship is coming to a close, though it has been an enjoyable experience overall. I am excited to step into my new role as sub-foreman in August, and learn more as I continue to progress through my career,” he said.

As he moves into the next phase of his career, Josiah has some great advice for budding carpenters who are interested in working in the commercial industry.

“Ask questions all the time. In commercial construction, you can have hundreds of people on site, and therefore a wealth of knowledge in front of you. If there is something you do not understand ask a tradesman to explain it to you, that way you can gain a holistic understanding of the building process and your role in it.”

We wish Josiah all the best with his upcoming nomination and finishing his apprenticeship!
