School Based Trainee Learning New Skills Each Week

11 July 2019

School based trainee, Chloe Vanderstraaten, has already stepped outside her comfort zone and started experiencing what it is like to work in the vocational education sector.

She attended her first careers expo with her My Gateway colleagues only weeks into her traineeship – and she loved it.

“The highlight of my traineeship so far was getting out of the office and exploring an expo, seeing what other people do within the business,” said Chloe.

Chloe, who attends Leumeah High School, is undertaking her Certificate III in Business Administration. While doing her school-based traineeship at My Gateway, Chloe is supporting the School to Work team one day a week. She started her traineeship this past May and has already completed the first unit of her studies.

Chloe has worked on a number of different projects since she started including a PowerPoint presentation that contained information on WHS and recruitment. She has also helped create a schools contact database and a flyer to assist the team with their upcoming school-based apprenticeships and traineeships interview day.

“My experience has been good,” said Chloe. “I have learnt lots of skills and seen what it is like to be a part of a business environment.  It has been an experience learning the dynamics of the business, and learning and understanding the roles of people and meeting some great new people along the way.”

Chloe has seen an improvement in her computer and typing skills and hopes to continue developing professionally. Once she has completed her school-based traineeship and HSC, Chloe hopes to continue building her skills in the business world.

“I am hoping to gain further knowledge and other qualifications within the business environment,” she said.
