Apprentice Grateful for Surreal Scholarship Win

21 December 2022

We would like to congratulate fabrication apprentice, Haillie McDonald, who has been awarded the 2022 Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship.

Haillie is in the first year of her apprenticeship, working at long-time host business, Baker & Provan. She is also a mature-age apprentice, having started her qualification later in life compared to many of her peers.

The scholarship is worth $5,000 each year for up to three years. With cost-of-living pressures and financial expenses that come with being an apprentice, this scholarship is already impacting Haillie’s life positively.

“It [the scholarship] has already assisted me in the way of significantly reducing financial stress, which has improved my overall quality of life and allowed me to focus on finishing up my first year of study,” said Haillie.

Haillie has experienced many emotions since finding out about her win, something that still feels surreal.

“When I received the letter there was initially a mix of feelings, mostly disbelief and excitement,” said Haillie.

“As I’ve started to accept the reality of it all, I feel a huge sense of relief and an overwhelming amount of gratitude.”

Baker & Provan’s Managing Director, Mal Hiley, said everyone at the business is very proud of Haillie’s achievement.

“I and the whole team at Baker & Provan are delighted that Haillie backed herself and was able to successfully present her capabilities and potential,” he said.

“I am always conscious of character as well as skill and we are proud to have someone of Haillie’s level-headed capability within our fabrication team.”
